THE NEW ZEALAND GUIDE TO TEMPORARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

NZGTTM stands for the New Zealand Guide to Temporary Traffic Management, the national framework created by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi that sets out how roadworks, events and utilities must safely manage traffic on kiwi roads.

It is a fundamental shift away from rigid, rule-following compliance. Instead it asks the industry to use a tailored, risk-based approach, assessing the real hazards of each site and putting the right controls in place for them.

At SRS, we didn't muck around when it came to preparing ourselves for the changeover. Our management and design team have been trained in risk review and assessment to achieve specialist qualifications that ensure we assess, and apply suitable controls to the day-to day risks our field teams are faced with, before we put our staff on the road.

A thorough risk assessment takes place before any design of our traffic management plans. This ensures we look outside the box and don't just select the best option from a list. Only when we have assessed all the risks and considered the safest controls, will we then design a TMP.

The risk based approach also means more consultation, communication and coordination between everyone involved in the project. SRS ensure our risk assessments are done in collaboration with our clients and any subcontractors or other PCBU's who have a stake in the works. This means we are considering all angles and possible risks associated with the work.

When all parties are satisfied with the risk assessment and TMP,  it is then submitted for RCA review and approval. When the TMP is approved, our STMS or TMO in charge will review it and prepare for the job.

On site, a further site-specific risk assessment and toolbox meeting is done on site by our STMS or lead TMO before starting works, to ensure that nothing has been missed and that the team is aware of the risks and controls associated with their work for the day.
